The library at Scoil Mhuire was set up in 2015 to promote and improve literacy within the school.
Since then it has been facilitating library classes for 1st and 2nd year students, in which the very successful Accelerated Reading program is used. (For more on Accelerated Reader, please read here http://www.renlearn.co.uk/accelerated-reader
The library is staffed by a librarian and open every day including break and lunch times for students to use.
Our collection is growing all the time and we currently have over 2,000 fiction titles available. These include junior fiction, YA fiction, general fiction, graphic novels and audiobooks. The library also stocks a variety of non-fiction and reference material, newspapers and magazines, as well as study aid resources. We are also members of the JCSP Digital Library project, which offers a wide selection of e–books and audiobooks for Junior Cert students.
We have a computer station for students to use at break and lunchtime and also Kindles available on request. The library hosts many of the learning support classes at the school with a variety of resources available. It is also used as a quiet study area during the day for students who have a free class and wish to avail of it.
The library runs a very popular student Bookclub every week (Thursday, lunchtime) in which students from all years are invited to take part in reading and discussing a bookclub book choice. It has proven to be a great outlet for students to interact with each other and share their reading enjoyment. The library also has a creative writing group which meets weekly (Tuesday, lunchtime). We have recently started a Staff Bookclub as well.
There is a varied calendar of events throughout the year that take place through the library. This includes the production of the school newspaper ‘The Blue & Navy, Read DL projects, Poetry Day events and activities, author visits, Reading Buddies, Book Swaps and Positive Mental Health week.
