TY Admin Monday 11th Sept 2023
All monies and permission slips in by 9am tomorrow please.
PE uniform required to go on the trip tomorrow.
Welcome
Let's start by welcoming everyone to the TY class of 2023/24. Hope everyone has settled in ok. There seems to be a bit of maneuvering around form groups. Just to explain groupings were made with friends in mind, but not putting large friend groups together, so as to promote the ethos of TY i.e. making new friends, opening horizons, getting out of our comfort zone and not letting any large friend group take over the make-up and agenda of a class.
As you are aware there are a lot of classes where students are out of form group and mixing with regard their subject choice. Also by the nature of TY we mix and work together as a full group often. So please hang tight and give things a chance.
Creeslough Trip - Gaisce Adventure Journey

Work Experience 2023
Garda Vetting
If a student is working with children or vulnerable adults as part of their work experience they will need to be garda vetting. Students can only be garda vetted when they are 16 years of age. There is no requirement or method of garda vetting someone who is under 16. Nikki takes care of garda vetting in the school.
Gaisce Presidents Award
Be organised for this award folks. We are starting it by going on the Adventure journey. Everyone in TY completes this award.
- You must have 1 hr of a new skill for 26 weeks ( your IT class)
- You must have 1hr of physical activity
- You must have 1hr of community involvement (eg Scifest, YSI, Future Leader, homework club, park run, tidy towns etc )
We will be registering for this online in 2 weeks so please have decided your various options. You will have a record sheet to complete and will need to get the activities signed off on by an adult supervisor.
John Paul II Award
After the talk from the DIocese on John Paul hopefully a large number of you will get involved. It is a very worthwhile award to take part in, and can be as spiritual or religion based as you wish. Any community involvement to complete for Gaisce can be used for JOhn Paul too.
Community Involvement
In general, everyone regardless of what subjects they have chosen should be getting involved in some community projects. This is an important part of TY and counts towards your final result.
Some options to start with are
Buncrana Park Run -every Saturday 9.30am at the shorefront
Homework Club-after school for first years
Tidy Towns - every Saturday 10.00am -11.00am Tourist office meet up
GAA Introduction to Gaelic Games
Donegal GAA are going to provide 20 of our students with the opportunity to get 5 weeks training to be coaches for games. This is a great opportunity for those involved or interested in GAA. The certified course will run during PE on Thursday mornings from 8.50-10.10am starting on Thursday 28th September. These students may then be needed to help out with GAA in the Primary schools.
FAI Soccer Coaching
Shane Barr will attend the school to provide certified coaching training in soccer for our TY students on Monday 18th September. This is the training that the local soccer clubs do from time to time in Maginn. It qualifies you to be a coach of underage groups. This type of certification is good for the CV particularly if you look for a part time job that involves young people or apply for a course that trains you to work with young people. There will be a cost involved in this unfortunately. It could be around 35 euro. Possibly your local soccer club might help you with this if you are then able to help them with coaching.
TY Chromebooks
Can everyone please look after their allocated chromebook and make sure you put it back correctly and plug it in to charge. They are all numbered and assigned to each student as follows TY 2023 List.xlsx - Google Sheets.pdf
Parents email
It is very important that students give us an email address for their parent or guardian so that we can communicate effectively with them as requested. Please take the time to fill in their email now. Parents Email Address 2023/24
Google Classrooms
Can everyone join all of the teachers google classrooms and the TY coordinator classroom please. Reminder if you want to access documents shared with you from staff you need to be logged into your school email account.
